Take a ride back in time when Otaru was a thriving, flourishing business and trade center of Hokkaido. From the rickshaw, enjoying a constant sea breeze, you will be able to see and feel the sturdiness of the stone-built houses in the harbor. Start your ride by meeting your guide, at any time of the day between 9.30am and 5.30pm, either right in front of the train station or at one of the bridges over the canal. Then, let us take you on a relaxing tour of Otaru, a small town with many hidden charms, which our guide will gladly help you discover. Depending on the season you might find that in the winter, the snow covered town turns into a romantic winter wonderland while in the summer it serves as a refreshing getaway.
The tours described below are model routes. They may be further customized based on your preferred starting and ending point, the length of your tour and points of interests.
30 Minute Option
Starting at the Asakusa Bridge, you will have a view of the canal, hemmed with warehouses dating back to the Taisho era. Enjoy the view of the little, idyllic port, with mountains in the background. Admire historical buildings, dating back to the Meiji era. The final leg of the tour will take you through the northern part of town with its various restaurants and sushi shops.
45 Minute Option
Starting at the train station, continuing to the Asakusa bridge, from which you will have a view of a canal, hemmed with iconic warehouses dating back to the Taisho era. Enjoy the view of the idyllic port, with mountains in the background. Admire historical buildings, dating back to the Meiji era. The final leg of the tour will take you through the northern part of town with its various restaurants and sushi shops.
1 Hour Option
Starting at the train station, continuing to the port, you will have a view of the canal, hemmed with iconic warehouses dating back to the Taisho era. Enjoy the view of the idyllic port, with mountains in the background. Admire historic buildings, dating back to the Meiji era. Before the guide will take you through the northern part of town, you will get to see the remaining train tracks of the very first railway in Hokkaido.
2 Hour Option

Up to 2 children (age 6 years or under) can ride with 2 adults (children have to ride on an adult's lap) While rickshaws are able to fit two adults, each rickshaw is 29.1 inches (74 centimeters) wide, and it is sometimes more comfortable to book individual rickshaws for each passenger. For passengers of size, we recommend booking a rickshaw for each participant to ensure a comfortable ride. Passengers who do not both fit in one rickshaw but wish to participate in a tour at the same time will be required to purchase an additional rickshaw, which may not be available on the date of the tour with an English-speaking guide if not booked in advance. We had a wonderful and knowledgeable guide who made every minute of the rickshaw tour exciting. It was obvious he had studied the areas we toured, had a superb sense of humor, and fine talent in photography. Photography is his hobby and he set up our photos so that the lighting for each shot was perfect. Looking at the photos he took of us in the richshaw will bring back unforgettable memories of that day in snowy Otaru. We were so happy that we signed up for this event and had the luck of being assigned the tour guide that we had. I'm sorry I forgot this talented young man's name but I'm sure you can find his name in your records.
This was our first experience with Viator and we were so pleased not only with the event, but how they set up the tour purchase and provided excellent contact information with their on-site office. I was able to contact a real person from the time of purchase as well as in the days prior to the tour for confirmation purposes. Because of this, I will continue to book with Viator in the future.

Our guide was super amazing! He seems to be our age which makes it more easier to interact. He took us to the places that it not so touristy but we still got very nice views AND pictures of course. Overall, I would definitely recommend this and our guide to everyone!
