What has put Pattaya on the tourism map is that this sunny, fun-filled destination along the Eastern side (or the sunset side) of the upper Gulf of Thailand just is so diverse. Long-stretched beaches lined by a road and hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, massage shops and other businesses are merely a stone’s throw away from more quiet beach regions such as Jomtien, Sattahip and Naklua. These latter regions provide an escape of sorts for those who do not want to be in the middle of it all but still are within distance of happening Pattaya. If you want to see than what you can see from your beach chair or swimming pool lounger, discover the other side of this bustling tourism spot; even it is only for half a day!
Depending on your preference, you can either choose a morning of an afternoon departure, all starting from your Pattaya hotel or resort (conditions apply for other beaches). We first head deeper into the main province, Chonburi, to visit a local market. The way that trade takes place here has not changed much for decades; colours, smells and activity tantalize all your senses, coming from all wind directions. Your guide will explain the various ingredients, fresh fruit, vegetables and typical Thai household goods and how these are used in the common Thai household.
Pattaya’s Marine Museum houses a collection of all things living under the ocean surface off its sandy coast lines. Species of fish and coral are on display here when you are not eager to take the plunge and see what lies beneath the blue waters. From here, it is a short drive to Khao Sam Muk, better known as Monkey Cliff. Hundreds of tame, yet frequently naughty monkeys are calling this place home. These primates are accepted as the permanent residents of this part of Pattaya and are protected by those people living around Monkey Cliff. Their cheeky behaviour and playfulness will result in some amazing pictures.
The day has not come yet to an end: we head to a stone cutter village, one that continues to keep the tradition alive like it has been done from generation to generation. The rocks and mountains around Pattaya are idea sources for this ancient craft and skilled artisans will show you the process from rough material to the final product. One of the most interesting oyster farms Thailand follows, nearby Pattaya; perhaps you may find yourself standing eye to eye with one holding a real pearl!
