Bangkok's Chinatown is one of the largest in the world, but you don't have to worry about navigating it on your own. On this walking tour, you'll delve into the original Chinese settlement of Talat Noi, which formed more than 200 years ago. Numerous traditions and community ties have been passed down since, resulting in a vibrant culture tucked away in a dense tangle of alleys.
Meet your guide at the River City Mall to start your tour in the cooler morning air. Stroll along small lanes lined with street vendors, noodle shops, private homes and grease-stained auto shops ─ the modern-day version of the blacksmith trade that once flourished here. As you walk, your guide shares stories about various waves of Chinese immigration to Thailand and the related changes over time.
See a number of Chinese shrines and the original site of Siam Commercial Bank, Bangkok’s first bank, opened in 1910. Take a look at Holy Rosary Church, a Gothic-style church built in 1786 on the banks of the Chao Phraya River by Portugese traders, some of the first Europeans to establish ties with Siam.
You'll also hear the story behind another landmark, a Chinese-style gate at the head of Yaowarat Road, a key boulevard in Chinatown. Constructed in 1999 by Thai people of Chinese descent, the gate honors the King of Thailand.
