Begin your tour with a morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, then head out of the city on the 2.5-hour drive to the coastal town of Essaouira. Widely considered to be the jewel in the crown of the Moroccan coastline, Essaouira boasts sea breezes, vibrant markets and a rich culinary heritage.On arrival in Essaouira, follow your private guide to a local argan oil cooperative and watch as workers extract the valuable oil from kernels of the argan tree. Argan oil is a staple in Moroccan cooking, drizzled on pasta or couscous to bring an extra depth of flavor to regional dishes.Continue on into the bustling medina, where local artists, painters, potters, silversmiths and woodworkers produce attractive arts and crafts the way they have for centuries. Stroll among the busy market stalls with your guide and admire the range and quality of traditional items produced. You'll also stop for a delicious included lunch of regional specialties.Next, head to the harbor ─ still as busy as ever despite the march of time ─ and watch as fishermen haul their catches onto land. Listen as your guide details the rich Portuguese colonial heritage still evident in Essaouira and enjoy beautiful views over the medina from the town’s seaside fortress.Take a drive out of town with your private guide to the winemaking territory of Val d’Argan, where grape-laden vines flourish in the warm Moroccan sunshine.
