This tour is geared towards culturally-curious and artistically-inclined travelers seeking to spend time in a real local community and to immerse themselves deep in Japanese culture. This is a sister product of our signature walking tour "Hello Tokyo" which covers a relatively recent part of the city's history whereas "Hello Edo" focuses on the middle age Tokyo when the city was still called "Edo".
The tour conveniently starts from Asakusa, the city's busiest tourist destination, yet only a short bus ride takes you to a neighboring Sumida, a real community of artisans and craftsman. You will first visit a calligraphy workshop and design your own folding fan using a special font developed during the Edo period. You will learn more than just calligraphy because they way characters are written provides some explanations for Japanese philosophy and behavioral pattern.
Another short train ride takes you to Ryogoku where you will learn about the everyday life of people (both elites and commoners) during the Edo period at the Edo-Tokyo Museum through numerous models of towns, figurines and life-sized figures.
