A popular experience in Tokyo for years, maid caf?s developed out of the cosplay (costume play) and kawaii trends in Japan. Loosely translated to mean the quality of all things cute — Hello Kitty or Pokemon, for example — kawaii is incorporated into everyday life via the maid caf?s, which were originally created for otaku, fans of Japanese anime, manga and video games. The costumed female staff (maids) resemble the wide-eyed characters found in anime and manga, and they remain in character while interacting with customers at the caf?s.
Your maid caf? experience takes place in the the Akihabara district, which is known for these caf?s, as well as specialty shops that cater to otaku. When you arrive for your reservation, one of the maids welcomes you into the caf?, decorated with cute design flourishes and brightly colored tables and chairs. Take a seat at your table and choose a dish from the simple, kid-style menu — perhaps omelette rice, a hamburger, curry rice or spaghetti, or maybe something sweet. Your meal comes with one nonalcoholic drink, and alcoholic drinks are available for purchase.
Your time in the caf? includes a 5-minute dance performance by the maids. If you speak any Japanese or your maid speaks any English (most do not), you may get the chance to chat with her. Otherwise just take in the unique atmosphere. Before you leave, you may have a photo taken with your maid, if you wish.
