Enjoy convenient pickup by minivan from your downtown Sapporo hotel or JR Sapporo Station, and travel with your guide on a 30-minute drive south of the city. Pass orchards of cherries and strawberries and arrive at Mt Hakkenzan (or Mt Hakken), with an elevation of 1,634 feet (498 meters), which you’ll head up by foot to kick off your full-day tour.
Originally known as Mt Kannoniwa-yama, the mountain was renamed Mt Hakkenzan, meaning ‘eight-swords mountain,’ after the distinctive serrated ridge along the top. Receive a safety briefing, take up a trekking pole and follow your mountain guide on a 2-hour (round-trip) moderate-to-difficult hike. No experience necessary, but your heart will be pumping from both the ascent and the views.
Wander through dense green forests, blankets of alpine flowers, and then huff up the trail and come out onto panoramic views of mountain scenery. Encounter challenging rocky terrain, and walk right next to sheer drops on a roped-off trail. At the top, you're rewarded with views of Jozankei hot springs and the northern section of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Make out Toyohira River, Sapporo’s water source that runs through the city.
During the hike, stop at a spot along the river for a picnic lunch, which may include broiled lamb with vegetables, tempura udon or a sandwich. (Depending on the weather, you may be taken to a local restaurant instead.)
After the hike, you're driven to a base camp for your 1-hour canoeing adventure. After a safety briefing, climb into a canoe (fits two people) and start paddling from the Jozankei district along the upper Toyohira River. Enjoy laid-back waters and catch sight of wildlife. Listen for cicadas if you’re here in the summer, and in the fall, vibrant oranges and reds of autumn leaves flank the river.
Return your canoe to base camp and then hop aboard your minivan for transport back to your Sapporo hotel.
