Start with a pickup from your centrally located hotel by your private guide. Then, set off on foot to discover Athens’ ancient and modern highlights.Begin at the UNESCO-listed Acropolis of Athens — the ancient citadel and archaeological site situated on a high, rocky outcrop above the city. Pay your entrance fee and then head inside with your guide to see some of the world’s finest archaeological treasures.As you ascend the sacred hill, see and learn about important sights such as the Parthenon, Propylaea gateway, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. Then, enjoy a leisurely walk through the Ancient Agora, once the heart of ancient Athens, and stop for a coffee (own expense) at a charming cafe nestled in a postcard-perfect secret garden.Next, continue to the flea market neighborhood of Monastiraki. Together with your guide, weave through the market stalls and soak up the buzzing atmosphere as locals and visitors alike haggle with traders over clothes, shoes, handbags, pottery and jewelry. Breathe in the heady aromas as you pass stalls selling local produce such as cheese, olive oil, honey, cured meat and wine, stopping occasionally to sample some for yourself. Continue your tour wandering through the trendy Psiri district, known today for its restaurants and bars.After exploring this neighbourhood, make for Plaka, the city’s Old Town. Have your camera ready as you traverse the maze-like streets lined with neoclassical architecture, Byzantine churches and busy independent shops.
