On this historical walking tour, learn all about Berlin and the Cold War as you follow your guide to Berlin’s top sites. Learn about the two sides of Berlin that remained for 40 years after World War II: one a bastion of the West behind the Iron Curtain and the other a capital city vying to demonstrate the superiority of communism.
Begin your tour at Hackescher Markt train station in East Berlin at 10am. From there, head to the Berlin Wall memorial and get a sense of the security arrangements designed to prevent GDR citizens from reaching West Berlin. Learn from your guide about the risks that many people took to escape the notorious state security service, the Stasi, and how many lost their lives in the attempt. Continue to the Bornholmer Strasse to see the spot where the Wall fell in 1989 and hear the story behind this historic event.
Walk down Karl-Marx-Allee, formerly known as Stalinallee, and learn how this boulevard’s wedding cake-like architecture was designed to illustrate communist power during the Cold War.
Then visit the former headquarters of the Stasi, East Germany’s terrifying secret police, and learn how the East German state increasingly spied upon its own people, creating a system of complete government control over its citizens.

This trip was fantastic. Our guide Torben was absolutely brilliant. He was very friendly and approachable, exceptionally knowledgeable, very kind and good fun. The tour took us to parts of East Berlin that we would never have found as a tourist. We not only walked but also caught the train and visited the Stase, the wall, the Ghost station, the bohemian quarter and at all times being provided with the detailed history and events.
I would highly recommend this tour. It is exceptional value for the cost. -

We did this tour with guide Rick, who was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It was an excellent tour where we saw things that we would not have found on our own. I would recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in the history behind the building of the wall and what life was like for east Berliners during that time. It is a fascinating insight into the history of the city at that time.

The guide was very knowledgeable and we covered a lot of ground both walking and by subway. However, I am disappointed in Viator's booking practices. I am 65 but when I tried to book the tour on-line for one senior, the response was that the tour was unavailable. When I switched to one adult, the trip miraculously was available. Shame on you, Viator, for discriminating.

This tour was amazing. We saw many sights that we would never have been able to see on our own. The tour was four hours, and we used the Berlin metro to get to many of the sites. Our guide, Rick, was exceptionally enthusiastic about this tour he said it was his favourite one. He didn't just show us sites, he personalized the experience, and made us understand what life was like for East Berliners.

This is a good tour. It gives you a lot of background and really helps you understand what day to day life was like under Soviet influence.

The guide (Pip) was realy nice, she knew enough history and exciting facts to make the tour worth the money. So the tour and the guide were good, but the agency Viator is not reliable. On your site you post that the tours are sold-out. This is not the case. Non of the tours were sold out.

Kevin was excellent at explaining the era and the sites, many of them emotionally moving.

The sites chosen by the guide were very atmospheric and really captured the sentiment and emotions of the divided city and what was happening in East Berlin. The wall itself, the gathering places for opposition against the communist regime, the events of 1989 were all covered. A very thoughtful tour.
