On this half-day trip from Prague, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the Gothic- and Renaissance-style Karlstejn Castle, built in 1348. As you explore, notice the attention to detail imposed by Charles IV, who was devoted to the rich interior decoration of his castle.
During the castle tour, you will move through the wildly impressive, step-like formation of the individual towers and buildings that make up the castle as a whole. At the lowest point lies the Well tower and Burgrave's palace; from there you’ll walk up toward the majestic Imperial palace, made up of five floors. Then continue even further toward the Marian tower. Finally, you will discover the monumental 197-foot (60-meter) Great tower, located at the highest point of the castle.
The castle’s interior is still decorated with a unique array of wall paintings that date back to the 14th century. In the Chapel of the Holy Cross you’ll find a collection of 129 Master Theodoric panel paintings, the largest collection of its kind in the world. Another large gallery contains portraits of Czech rulers and a replica of the Crown of St Wenceslas, the coronation crown of the Holy Roman Emperor.
In winter, if the Karlstejn Castle is closed, an alternative visit to the esk `ternberk Castle will be arranged. esk `ternberk is an imposing castle and is considered one of the best-preserved Gothic-style Bohemian castles of the mid-13th century. The castle stands at the top of a steep granite cliff on the western bank of the S□zava River in the market town of esk `ternberk. Interesting for those who enjoy delving deeper into the local history.

Nice overall tour. Bus ride was comfortable and not too long. Guide was very good. Nice castle and small town/shopping on the walk up to the castle. Walk was up hill but not too steep and made for an easy walk up to the castle.

5 stars for driver/guide - Our driver / guide was GREAT. He was very knowledgeable of history, and could converse in English very well.
2 stars for castle guide - My only concern was with the castle guide. In the first room there is a map of the Holy Roman Empire with the shields of the kingdoms within the empire. Above each shield is the name of the kingdom except for two shields, which have no title above them. The guide didn't know why the shield had no name. Each room is locked. When you go from one room to another, the guide unlocks the door, then locks it after everyone is in the new room. The flashing of the lock sometimes has a crown, sometimes it doesn't. I realized the doors leading into the king's room have a crown, the doors leading to common rooms do not have the crown. The guide had no idea of this. This was my first time at castle. This was her many times through castle. She should have known -
A must do if you have a half day to spare from Prague! Take the horse and carriage ride from the parking area- it is worth it!

Really enjoyed the castle and its surroundings. Great views from the top. Nice to walk down thru the town and explore a bit.

The trip was good. The guide was very nice and informative, very interested in getting to know everyone and able to explain everything in multiple languages. The bus driver was equally helpful and friendly and allowed my friends and I to stow our luggage on the bus for the duration of the trip, which was very nice. Keep in mind, however, these buses are small most are converted Mercedes Sprinter vans and people carriers, so don't come with more than a backpack and expect them to have room for it.
The Karlstejn Castle was okay, but nothing to write home about. The castle is mostly barren and you only get to see one of the two towers, so almost half the castle is off-limits. While we were inside, we were quite hurried along by the local guide and we were always with another group in the same room, meaning that both guides were speaking at the same time and it was hard to hear and make out what they were saying. Overall not very impressed by the castle visit itself.
If you are booking this tour, please keep in mind that the castle is on a mountain and you will have to climb a bit of a slope to get to it. This climb is not as exerting as other castle climbs in the region, but if you have trouble walking for long distances or tire very easily, you may want to choose something else.
I would recommend Viator or the local providers for the great service, but I would not recommend this castle visit. If you're looking for a good day trip from Prague, might want to look at other tours from Viator.

Loved seeing the countryside. That the guide was more interested in talking with the bus driver than giving us info on way there and back was not the best. The castle was worth seeing.

Beautiful Castle. Knowledgeable Be sure to arrange for a taxi or horse drawn carriage from bottom of hill up to castle. It is well worth it.

The Karlstejn Castle was an outstanding tour. Our guide was very through in explaining the history of the area and this castle. Enjoyed the tour very much.

Way too hectic. The guide did not wait for all in the group. It was a long and steep climb and I have a knee problem. Others too were irritated at this. The castle was beautiful, though. The bus was comfortable.
