Make your own way to Split’s main promenade to meet your local guide and begin your 4-hour walking tour. Called the Riva, the promenade stretches the entire length of Split Old Town, boasting magnificent views across the harbor.
Follow your guide to the colossal Diocletian’s Palace in the heart of historical Split. Built by the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century, the UNESCO-listed imperial residence covers more than 31,000 square meters (334 square feet) and is a popular local hangout. It was also featured in the hit HBO TV series Game of Thrones as the city of Meereen.
As you walk together with your guide through Peristil Square, the palace’s former entry hall, hear fascinating stories about Diocletian’s rags-to-riches life and learn about the palace’s history.
Next, continue to Peskarija, a famous fish market located in Split Old Town. Browse the bustling stalls that have provided fresh seafood to the locals for hundreds of years, and take in the sights, smells and sounds as the local tradespeople peddle their wares.
After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to a local restaurant for a traditional Dalmatian lunch. Feast on delicious air-dried smoked meat such as praut, soft sheep’s-milk cheese, octopus salad, anchovies and olives, all washed down with a goblet of wine or a gemiat (popular Croatian wine spritzer). As you dine, listen to your guide share intriguing facts and details about Split’s past and present.

Excellent, excellent, excellent! wholly due to our excellent guide, Maja Bilic. She is an archaeologist by profession and actually worked on the uncovering/restoration of the actual sites we visited! Maja provided vivid context to everything we saw and touched, bringing ancient artifacts to life with her professional explanations. It helps tremendously that her knowledge of history is impeccable, and could correlate the Diocleatian period with the overall history of Europe.
Highly recommended!! Maja really transported us back 2000 years during the tour! -
Maja was a great tour guide---fluent in English, very informative, and patient with our questions. She is also very knowledgeable of the areas of Spilt where Game of Thrones scenes were filmed. Our tour started at 3 p.m. and the traditional lunch did not happen until around 4:30 but it was still very good. We went to Maslina and had the octopus salad and homemade bread.

tour guide was very knowledgable with good background of the history of not just Split but also the Roman times that are related as well. it was one of the best city tours i ever had.

If you love history you will love this tour! Mya our guide has a wealth of knowledge about the Diocletian's Palace and Split itself. We roamed around the palace and old town taking in the amazing history and soaking up the atmosphere. This was all topped off with lunch at a local cafe, The Olive, where we enjoyed some traditional food and a glass of wine. A great afternoon had by all!
