Your backcountry Yukon adventure begins mid-morning at the Visitor Information Centre in downtown Carcross; if you choose pickup in Whitehorse, you’ll depart an hour earlier and enjoy the scenic drive south to Carcross with views of the coastal mountains.
After settling into your seat in the four-wheel-drive Unimog, which holds up to 10 passengers, head with your guide into the wilderness! This part of Canada isn’t seen by many visitors, and you’ll be rewarded with unblemished alpine vistas as you make the 3,000-plus-foot climb up Montana Mountain. A large volcanic massif, Montana Mountain sits just north of the border between Yukon and British Columbia. Spanning an area of approximately 70 square miles (180 sq km), the mountain boasts several peaks, including Montana itself at 7,243 feet (2,208 meters), as well as Brute Peak, Matheson Peak and Dail Peak.
As you drive, learn about both the physical and cultural attributes of Montana Mountain from your guide, who will tell you about native wildlife like mountain goats and woodland caribou, as well as the mountain’s role in the ancient legends of the Tagish and Carcross First Nations.
There will be time to explore on foot, if you wish, or simply snap shots of the scenery from the Unimog. With your guide, visit the site of a historical silver mine, see a secluded lake, look for animals and sit down to an alfresco picnic lunch of local Yukon ingredients: a sandwich or wrap, fruit, veggies and dip, juice and other drinks, and sweets.
