You’ll be picked at your hotel for the scenic drive around Lake Ontario to Fort George, the scene of some significant battles during the War of 1812 and the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army at the time. Once there, you’re largely on your own to do what you want, making this tour perfect for the independent traveler. The fort today consists of thick walls, block houses, living quarters, and a powder magazine, the only remaining original building. Stand on the imposing ramparts and gaze across the Niagara River to Fort Niagara on the US side of the border.
Afterward, visit the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, home to 15,000 people. In the 18th century, it was a haven for American-based British loyalists, who fled here during the American Revolution. Walk the streets, stopping to read the plethora of plaques on houses and buildings denoting historical events. Besides being steeped in history, Niagara-on-the-Lake offers doses of charm in the form of boutiques, caf□s and restaurants. Pop into shops, take a breather with a cup of tea or just hang around the center of town absorbing the atmosphere of southern Ontario’s cutest town.
On the way back to Toronto, you’ll drive through Ontario’s main wine region. Stop at a winery and take in the ambience, perhaps sampling a fine vintage, before ending your daylong venture into history and wine with drop-off at your hotel.行程概要出發地點
