When your cruise ship docks at the Puerto Madryn port, you’ll be picked up by your professional guide and taken on a private shore excursion to Punta Tombo, located 3.5 hours south.
This peninsula, a fauna and penguin preservation area created in 1979, is home to the most important Magellan penguins colony in Patagonia. Almost one million of these loveable creatures arrive from the Atlantic at this place every year in order to breed, incubate their eggs, and prepare their offspring for migration. Though the first penguins arrive in September and stay until April, the best season to see them is after November, once the babies are born, so this is the perfect opportunity for you to experience the penguins!
Your guide will lead you down the 2-mile (3-km) stretch of beach so you can get up close to these amazing animals. Walk among the penguins, witness their habits, and see how they feed their babies, fight for the defense of their territories, and build their nests. You’ll watch these tender animals more closely than you ever imagined you could!
After this unique wildlife experience, you’ll be taken back to the Puerto Madryn port.

We had decided we saw enough penguins and asked our tour guide if he could alter our private trip for us. He happily agreed and made our day enjoyable for us!

The travel agency was very accommodating. We would highly recommend them.
The is not much to in terms of scenery on the long, very long, drive from Puerto Madryn to Punta Tombo. If you've seen penguins on another shore excursion already then going to Punta Tombo is not a must at all. Having said that, the proximity to which you can see the penguins is wonderful and the colony is very large. Take some time to explore the area where you buy the ticket. -

The tour guide Facundo was courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. On route, he pointed out the wild life and unique features of the landscape. Because we started out far earlier than those from the cruise excursions, we got there almost as the first group of visitors. We got plenty of time and space to see and photograph the penguins before the crowd poured in. We were amazed to observe how the penguins live, interact and play. It was a fantastic experience. It was a worth while trip.

The Punta Tombo penguin rookery was amazing. Getting to see so many penguins up close and personal was a fabulous experience. Communication was difficult which limited the educational side. The driver seemed to be very knowledgeable but didn’t speak English, and the interpreter was not very good.

The Good: Going to Punta Tombo in a private car is much easier/faster than going on a bus. We got there earlier and before the tourists and were able to enjoy it with less people rather than loads of crowds. The penguins are the cutest!! We saw a lot of their chicks that were in the nests waiting for the parents to bring them food. Our driver took us to another private beach to see the Seals that you don't normally see with a bus tour, or you see them from afar, not up close. Just note it is a bit of a drive from Puerto Madryn to the Penguin Colony about 2.5 hrs so can image it's must longer with a bus
What can be improved: Our tour guide forgot about us : there was definitely a misunderstanding about the scheduled tour even though we had email confirmation including pick-up time. It was quite frustrating and scary when they told us there is no tour but the guy was able to get a drive in 20 min so he came through and we were able to have our tour. Perhaps just double-check with the company a week before to ensure it's confirmed : -
Well worth the effort to go to see thousands of penguins.
Being only two in the private tour with a guide/driver that was little or no help during the tour. You would think for the money paid the touring group who would have made more of effort for the 600 plus invested.

This tour is quite expensive, however, if you can afford it, definitely go PRIVATE!
We were part of the Celebrity cruise stopping at Punta Tombo. With the private tour, we were able to beat all the buses 10 bus load at least of people going to the Pneguin Colony. We had the freedom of arriving before anyone - the place was practically empty when we arrived and as we were leaving, some of the folks on the bus were just arriving.
This is an amazing place with million of penguin! It was not at all as I expected - I thought they would all be gathered on the beach, but in actually, there were bushes and trees every where and families of penguins have their own homes disbursed around the entire area.
Definitely a must see! -
Well worth the drive to see penguins living in such an unlikely habitat.

Great excursion to a must see sight. If on a South America cruise rounding Cape Horn and do only one penguin excursion, it has to be this one. very satisfied with Viator's reliability and service
