After port pickup, travel with your guide south to Shirley Heights. Located above English Harbour, Shirley Heights served as a British military complex and observation post in the 18th century. Your guide points out the partially restored fortifications scattered about the area.
Along the trail at Shirley Heights stands the museum of Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre. Inside, enjoy a 15-minute multimedia presentation of the island’s history, culture and heritage.
Return to the trail and head to the vista point, and marvel at stunning views of English and Falmouth Harbours, as well as Nelson’s Dockyard. Look far across the Caribbean and make out the islands of Montserrat and Guadeloupe. The amazing coastal views continue at Blockhouse hill, the easternmost point of Shirley Heights, where you can see the remains of officers’ quarters and a powder magazine.
(Take a short and pleasant drive to Nelson’s Dockyard, constructed along the 15 square miles (39 sq km) of English Harbour, and featuring the only remaining Georgian naval dockyard in the world. Learn from your knowledgeable guide about how Admiral Nelson designed the facilities in 1784 to hide and repair British ships, and walk by some of the restored sites.
Your guide leaves you at Cooper and Lumber Hotel, after which you have free time to explore the dockyard on your own. Visit shops and art galleries, or enjoy a beverage from the terrace of the old Admiral’s Inn.
Regroup with your guide and head east to Pares Village and visit Betty’s Hope, Antigua’s first sugar plantation built in 1674, now an important monument and reminder of the island’s history of slavery. Stroll by the derelict distillery and two stone mills, one of which has been fully restored.
On your way back, travel through a rainforest on Fig Tree Drive, passing by fruit trees and rolling green hills, and arrive at the port.
