Tour Description:
You will be introduced to the beautiful sites, villages and towns of the New Forest, with thatched cottages lining the streets and ponies, donkeys and horses ambling gently down the middle of our villages to greet residents as they leave their homes. Truly some of the most picturesque scenery anywhere in the UK but the New Forest also has a rich history and culture. After driving through some of the most beautiful villages in England the tour will begin:
WWII Beaulieu
You will enjoy the peaceful riverside surroundings of the historic village of Beaulieu and tour the reconstructed cottage interiors for a taste of 18th Century life within Bucklers Hard. We will explore the Maritime Museum to learn more about the village history and its residents on the banks of the beautiful Beaulieu River, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Beaulieu in WWII and New Forest spies or Special Agents formed a vital part of our wartime defence strategy.
You will hear audio recordings from US forces heroes like Colonel Jake L Cooper (DFC) of the 493rd Squadron, 48th Fighter Group of the 9th USAAF who was based in Iblsey. Capt Darrell.R.Lindsey from the USAAF was based in Holmsley and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honour. This is the equivalent of the British Victoria Cross, an honour not bestowed on any British Air Force personnel within the New Forest. We will give you an insight into the crucial role played by US forces here in the New Forest and we will showcase the visit of General Eisenhower in September 1946. Towns like Beaulieu, Lymington and Brockenhurst were home to great numbers of Allied forces and beaches surrounding the New Forest played a pivotal role in the D-Day landings, launching 1000’s of soldiers to the ultimate battle.
Lymington
The Georgian market town of Lymington is set on the coast in the beautiful New Forest National Park. Famous for its sailing history, and seen as the UK’s premier sailing destination. The town’s narrow streets are lined with pretty period cottages and houses, famous for smuggling, salt-mining and sailing, the town is steeped in history and is a must see destination.
You will enjoy a traditional lunch before being given a guided tour of the Museum & Art Gallery. Then you will have an opportunity to enjoy shopping in the boutiques up and down the High Street, whilst benefiting from using our exclusive discount card. A truly wonderful day in the tranquillity of the New Forest.
