Your guide will also explain the island's uses; for example, after the great plague in 293 BC, the Temple of Asclepius was built on the island in honor of the Greek god of healing.Cross a bridge and head to nearby Basilica di San Nicola in Carcere (Church of St Nicholas in Prison), an 11th-century church that harbors some fascinating Roman excavations. Learn about the church's real claim to fame as you tour inside, and descend below ground to marvel at remnants of three ancient Roman temples that once stood on the site. Explore pathways that Roman citizens used in the 5th century BC to trod their way between the temples and to nearby markets.Your 2-hour tour concludes on the church's ground level.
