Meet your guide at Milan’s Cadorna train station in the morning, hop on a train and relax on the 1.5-hour ride to Laveno-Mombello, a lovely port town on the western banks of Lake Maggiore.
The second-largest lake in Italy, Lake Maggiore straddles the Piedmont and Lombardy regions, and is most famous for its gorgeous Borromean Islands. Literature buffs may know the area as being a setting in Ernest Hemingway's infamous novel, A Farewell to Arms.
With your guide, hop on a boat and enjoy views of splendid lakeside villas and Mediterranean gardens as you cruise for 1.5 hours along the deep-blue water. Float past Isola Madre, lush with exotic vegetation year-round, before arriving at the picturesque Isola dei Pescatori (Island of the Fishermen).
Spend time exploring the little island at your leisure. Explore the maze of narrow alleys, and pop into a cafe or restaurant for lunch (own expense).
Back on the boat, cruise to Isola Bella (Beautiful Island), one of the larger Borromean Islands. Here, visit independently Borromeo Palace, a 17th-century baroque palace featuring lovely Italian gardens. Then, enjoy free time to explore independently or go shopping in town.
Hop on the boat again in the late afternoon and cruise to your last stop, the elegant lakeside town of Stresa. With its easy access to Milan, Stresa was a favorite destination for artists and writers in the 19th century, including Hemingway. Enjoy free time to explore the hive of cobbled streets in Stresa Old Town.

The most wonderful lake we have ever seen including the islands. Would have been better if we'd stopped at the Isola della Madre.

Absolutely fantastic! Franco was the ultimate tour guide. His knowledge was amazing and his energy was contagious. What a great Milan experience!

The guide was more interested in self promoting. She treated the tour as a day out and a chance to talk about herself and what she had done previously. When we arrived at Isola Bella she pulled a couple of sheets of paper with text downloaded from Wikipedia and read a paragraph to our group then claimed that it was boring so for us to just go and explore. She had with her headsets in order to give commentary however these remained in her bag all day. We did not learn anything at all from this woman which we were very disappointed about. Our opinion of small group tours are that they have poor quality guides and that the bigger groups are better value

Tour started out a little shaky-on the wrong train so we had to retrace steps back to Milan but our guide was very personable and we enjoyed the rest of the trip. Maggiore is beautiful.

My mother and I got extremely lucky to go on a private tour of Lake Maggiore with Fabio, a great and wonderful guide. There was only another young couple with us, so it was a lot of fun with just the 5 of us! Fabio had great storytelling demeanor and told us a brief history of Milan. We took the train, so that's why we met at the Caldorna train station, where Fabio found us on time. We took very short boat rides to Lake Maggiore and another small island I can't remember the name of at the moment, had time for a delicious lunch and shopping. And sightseeing of course. We met at our designated areas pretty much on time, and had a full fun day with Fabio. Thank you!
