We really were on our own for this trip. Our tickets for the train, Rome metro passes and Colosseum tour were given to us in the AM with some instruction and then we were off. I would recommend eating before or bringing food with you to eat on the train. My family went to the Vatican City as soon as we arrived and we were racing to get to our afternoon tour of the Colosseum. We had a terrible time finding the meeting place at the Colosseum but did find it at the last second. The forum was really cool and very informative. We really needed more time in Rome and would recommend an overnight stay to see more.
