Widely considered the most important war memorial in Europe, the Vimy Memorial also commemorates the thousands of fallen Canadian soldiers with no known grave.During your visit, hear how the Canadian troops fought the German Sixth Army during the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 ─ the first time that all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together as one. See preserved trench lines, bomb craters, wartime tunnels and reinforced strongholds, and learn of the many hardships the soldiers faced.Continue on with your guide to the Wellington Quarry in Arras, an underground museum set inside the British and New Zealand Armies’ WWI tunnels. As you explore, learn how more than 24,000 British and Allied forces attacked German defences during the Battle of Arras in 1917 and hear of the many uses to which the tunnels were put during the war.See visual displays including graffiti etched into the tunnels’ walls by soldiers, and gain insight into the living conditions endured there. Arras stood firm under French control throughout WWI, remaining the only town in France to hold a front-line position for the entire duration of the war.Enjoy free time for lunch (own expense) in Arras and explore at your leisure.
