    In 1860, a contest was launched for the construction of a new opera house in Paris. It was young architect Charles Garnier's project that was unanimously adopted for its exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture. 73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe, with the capacity to welcome more than 2000 people.

    I went on a Sunday afternoon which was a mistake. The number of people, including several tour bus loads, made the meeting and staging area of the tour a total cacophony of unbearable noise. In addition, an art installation by modern artist, Claude Leveque, honoring the 350th anniversary of the Palais Garnier, cast that first room in an eerie, disquieting dim blue light. Add in the noise and confusion of a few hundred people getting started on their tour and it was like one of Dante’s circles of Hell. When we reached the auditorium itself, again bad luck. Almost totally blacked out because a stage crew was working on lighting and preparing for an opera performance. We could see almost nothing of the opulent decor, or the infamous chandelier. In fact, it was fairly dangerous getting in and out of the auditorium in pitch black, but fortunately no one fell. I’m quite fascinated by this building and its history, but the (guided) tour was very disappointing,

    I loved this tour ! the guide was very knowledgeable and the tour very interesting! Opera Garnier is beautiful! I even booked N opera show for the same day! it was excellent .I recommend it.

    One of the best tours in Paris that we participated in. With such history the tour could have been twice as long. We loved it!

    I have forgotten the tour guide's name but she was excellent. She was very knowledgeable in the history, art and architecture of the Paris Opera. It was well worth the cost.I very highly recommend it.

    I'm so glad we booked this tour of the Opera House. It was very crowded, but we had no problem getting in. This is an amazingly beautiful building, and we all thought it was the nicest building in Paris. We got to go in to the opera hall and sit in the seats, which is something you can't do if you're not on a tour. The Marc Chagall ceiling is stunning to sit under, and the origin of the Phantom of the Opera was interesting to hear. We highly recommend this tour!

    I would've rated it lower, but the Opera is just so magnificent. And our tour guide, Rita, was amazing and very knowledgeable, but the way you need to line up and then go in various groups by a designated letter, is very disorganized. Our group already began after we got in. The line is VERY long, and you should arrive VERY early. And we were in the wrong line as our tour began at 11AM. She already started the tour. Luckily we spotted her and caught up. But she had to wait and get a headset that was working as one of ours wasn't. And later the two other women I was with said their headsets were picking up another language and one only worked intermittently. So it was a frustrating experience, but the place itself is breathtaking. I hope they can work out the kinks and make it pleasurable for everyone.

    This was quite a nice tour. The opera house is so beautiful and the tour is very informative. However, it was A bit crowded and seeing the auditorium was difficult at times when the stage lighting is being checked and house lights are dimmed.
