While your cruise ship is moored in Villefranche, immerse yourself in the rich art heritage of the French Riviera on this fascinating half-day shore excursion.
Over the centuries, many artists have been drawn to the French Riviera by its famously clear light, bright colors and azure seas. This has left the town of Nice and its surroundings with more than their fair share of museums and art galleries housing works by some of the world’s best-loved artists, including Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and more.
Meet your driver-guide at Villefranche cruise port in your air-conditioned minivan and head straight to the leafy Cimiez neighborhood in Nice to visit your first gallery ─ the Chagall Museum. Devoted to the works of Modernist Marc Chagall, who combined elements of Expressionism, Symbolism and Cubism in his paintings, the gallery's main draw is his famous collection of biblical paintings. Head inside and discover these intense and thought-provoking works as you listen to interesting commentary on your audio guide.
Next, continue to the nearby Matisse Museum on Cimiez Hill. Housed in a distinctive red Genoese villa that dates back to the 17th century, the architecture of this museum is arguably every bit as fascinating as the art it houses. Step inside and let the bright colors that exemplified Henri Matisse’s painting inspire and intrigue you as you wander around and explore independently.
Afterward, hop aboard your minivan and enjoy the scenic drive along the famous Middle Corniche coastal road to the peninsula town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
Standing on the narrowest part of the peninsula is the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a lavish Italian-style mansion surrounded by approximately 17 acres (7 hectares) of gorgeous gardens. On arrival, explore the ornately furnished apartments of Madame Ephrussi, and go outside to stroll around the magnificent gardens and take in their magical views over the Mediterranean Sea.
Your excursion ends when your driver drops you back off at the cruise port.
