While your ship is in Le Havre, take this private day tour of Normandy D-Day sites landed or captured by British forces during the World War II invasion by the Allies in 1944.
Meet your guide at Le Havre port and travel in your private vehicle to Normandy's coast. Along the way, hear the fascinating story of D-Day, from how it was planned by the British and American militaries to how it was executed. On the nights of June 5 6, 1944, more than 150,000 American, French, Canadian and British troops came ashore on five code-named beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
Stop at the site of Pegasus Bridge, where British forces landed in six gliders on the eve of D-Day to capture the bridge from the Germans. Learn more about the attack at the memorial and see the statue of Major John Howard, who led the nighttime assault.
Visit Sword Beach, the easternmost beach, where some 28,000 British and Free French soldiers landed to help capture the town of Caen. Afterward, visit some nearby German-held shelters, including the famous Hillman Bunker. Examine the chilling bunker that served as a German command and observation post, and imagine the courage of the Allied soldiers who stormed it on June 6, 1944.
After a stop for lunch (own expense), head to Normandy’s Commonwealth Military Cemeteries, where British soldiers are laid to rest. Read the moving epitaphs on the pristine headstones to learn the personal stories of the dead, and reflect on the heartfelt mementos and photographs that relatives have left at many gravesides.
At the end of your tour, return to Le Havre port in your private vehicle where your shore excursion comes to an end.
