The Luberon route covers a sizable ─ and at times challenging ─ route through the hills of Provence, so rest your legs and start your experience with a hotel pickup from central Avignon. Then, put on your helmet and follow your private guide as you take in the glorious landscape around you. The pace is steady, but a good standard of fitness is required to cope with the hilly terrain.Meander along countryside streets, past vineyards and gently sloping hills on a route that passes through Roussillon, a village known for its ochre-hued clay cliffs. Continue through the cliff-top village of Gordes to soak up some of the finest views in Provence, and then make your way through Bonnieux, Lacoste and M□nerbes, the one-time home of Peter Mayle. Hear how the British author lived in the village while writing about life in rural Provence.When lunchtime arrives, dig in to your Proven al picnic, brought along by your guide. The dishes vary per tour, but you can expect regional treats such as crusty baguette with tapenade, sun-dried tomato, salad, cheese, melon, fruit and olives. Do as the locals do and savor wine, a hot drink or perhaps a PAC □ l’eau (cordial with iced water) while eating in the shade of a plane tree.Feeling rested, hop back on your bike, and enjoy some leisurely cycling through the countryside. The afternoon is less about cycling than the morning portion, so stop after a short while to taste wine at a traditional Proven al winery.
