Begin your tour in the morning ─ either with a hotel pickup or at the Avignon tourist office ─ and hop aboard your air-conditioned minivan for the onward journey to the hillside town of Vaison-la-Romaine. With Roman and medieval architecture and history around ever corner, Vaison-la-Romaine is widely considered among France’s most magnificent ancient settlements.
On arrival, plug in your audio guide and set off to explore. Wander among the Roman ruins that bustled with life thousands of years ago. Discover signs of ancient civilization such as temples, mosaics, nobles’ mansions and workers’ quarters, and marvel at the town’s magnificent amphitheater.
On Tuesdays, stroll through the vibrant local market with your guide and soak up the atmosphere in this delightful corner of Provence. Enjoy a little free time to explore at your leisure, then meet a master cheese-maker for a tasting session of local cheese.
Continue onward for lunch in S□guret ─ considered by many to be one of France’s most beautiful villages. Tuck into a delicious lunch of homemade specialties such as a savory vegetable tart served with mixed salad and a glass of wine.
Follow your guide on a stroll through the village and admire panoramic views of the vineyard-covered countryside surrounding you.
Finish your day with a visit to a traditional winery and sample some of the fine C tes du Rh ne wines for which the area is famous. Gain insight into the age-old traditions that go into wine production in the region and learn of the complex flavours at play in your glass.
