2019 Performances at the Sydney Opera House:
Verve
Duration: TBC
A voyage through contemporary Australian dance
Alice Topp’s Aurum moved critics and audiences to superlatives, tributes and tears when it premiered in 2018. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi repairing cracked pottery with precious metals the work explores damage, healing and the beauty of our flaws. The dancers’ powerful movement and profound emotion are framed in a breathtaking staging by Jon Buswell, featuring a reflective golden floor and ripples of burnished light. This acclaimed work will have its New York premiere at the Joyce Theater in May.
Stephen Baynes’ Constant Variants mirrors the elegant classicism of Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with velvet-soft, delicate dance. Gliding airborne, captured in warm light and vast picture frames, his dancers conjure the mesmerising beauty of Renaissance paintings.
Verve ends with a bang: Tim Harbour’s Filigree and Shadow, the hit of our 2015 contemporary program. The stripped-back clarity of its set, designed by Sydney architect Kelvin Ho, contrasts with the ferocious complexity and speed of the choreography and the drama of the specially commissioned electronic score by German duo 48nord. Adrenaline tingles all the way to the explosive finale.

Giselle
Duration: 1 hour & 20 min approx
High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Giselle …”
Oscar Wilde’s lyrical story of a statue who gives his all to help humanity is full of poetic beauty, heartbreak, sly humour and sharp social commentary. In 2019, Graeme Murphy, who created The Australian Ballet’s acclaimed modern versions of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, turns his flair for transformative storytelling to Wilde’s moving tale. The possibilities for dance in Wilde’s characters the golden Prince, his loyal friend the Swallow, the seductive Reed, the pitiful Match Girl will be fabulously realised in Murphy’s distinctive choreographic style.
This all-Australian world premiere will feature a specially commissioned score from the renowned composer Christopher Gordon, who composed the scores for the films Mao’s Last Dancer and Master and Commander, alongside the work of award-winning artist and director Kim Carpenter, who adapted the story and created the colourful design, for the ballet. Playful and poignant, The Giselle will capture children’s imagination with its vivid spectacle and adults’ attention with its timely message: a kind heart shines
brighter than gold.
May 2019: 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16
Sylvia
Duration: TBC
Meet Sylvia: she’s a legend.
The story of Sylvia an arrow-wielding nymph who scorns love, falls in love, outwits her abductor and wins through to happiness first became a ballet in Paris over 150 years ago. The delightful Delibes score, which drew a rave review from Tchaikovsky, has since attracted some of the world’s leading choreographers, including Ivanov, Ashton, Balanchine and Neumeier. In 2019, Stanton Welch’s new production of Sylvia will have its Australian premiere. Welch, who recently staged his versions of La Bayad□re and Romeo and Juliet on The Australian Ballet’s stage, is a resident choreographer of the company, the artistic director of Houston Ballet and one of the art form’s great storytellers. His full-length Sylvia revolves around three intertwining love stories and features a striking new design by J□r me Kaplan (sets and costumes) and Wendell K. Harrington (projections), the creative dream team behind The Australian Ballet’s Cinderella. Welch’s Sylvia (which requires the lead ballerinas to learn sword-fighting) promises three strong superheroines, all the passion and humour of Greek myth, virtuoso dancing and one of ballet’s most charming scores.

Loved this experience. The tour exceeded expectations with insight to the history and engineering of this iconic structure. Also you get to be backstage and inside all the theaters while they are empty and see the inner workings of the theaters. Booking this package allows you to experience all three parts - the tour, dinner, and the show - with just one reservation, so it is a lot less stress and work on your end. The tour guide ensures you get to the restaurant just in time and the dinner is over with plenty of time to get to the show. It is all so convenient. We ate at Bennelong and the food was superb. The one thing I caution on is that everything I read prior stated the dress for the Opera House and the restaurant was smart casual - we wanted to dress up in skirt/dress pants and were glad we did. Everyone near us in the restaurant and the theater was very dressed up aside from one couple I saw in casual wear. We chose the most expensive seats in the package so folks in the balcony may have been more casual, but if you want to blend in I would suggest dressing up.

I really enjoyed the tour of the Sydney Opera House and getting to see a performance there. Our guide was very knowledgable about the architecture as well as the performances. While the ballet itself wasn't particularly notable, I greatly enjoyed the experience of seeing it in the opera house. The dinner was also a nice addition to the evening, although the food itself wasn't all that memorable. Overall, I would highly recommend this experience.
-
A great package which included the tour, meal and ticket to the ballet. No hiccups in the entire event which was professionally organised
and lived up to our expectations - well done to all involved. -
This tour is definitely worth it. I had never seen a ballet before, so I figured the Sydney Opera House was the best place to do it. Don't really think its my thing, but the ballet was still awesome. The dinner at Aria was phenomenal, and our tour guide of the Opera House was very knowledgeable about the history of the building. Highly recommend doing this tour if you are in Sydney.

I enjoyed the evening tremendously. The tour was great and informative, the dinner was great and performance very beautiful. I would have liked to be able to choose my seats in the theater. Instead, we found out the seatings just before the performance. But overall great evening and worth every penny!

This was a great experience with top class meal in Aria followed by our first ballet experience

AMAZING!!! Seen Swan Lake and it was breath taking. The restaurant was so elegant and the food was so delicious. Every one should do this. The only problem was the tour of the Opera House was not that good, I thought we were going back stage and we never did get there and the tour guy seemed kind of confused at times.

We loved it. Our guide, who later sold us the program, was so knowledgeable and charming. We liked it that the admin staff knew our names on arrival. Ten out of ten, everyone. The Aria meal was superb and the ballet remains with me still. We would definitely book things with you again. Thank you so much for making our time in Sydney so special,

Dinner could not have been better. The guide was courteous and what he knew was interesting, but I had thought we would see the backstage. Unfortunately I didn't know about the breakfast tour which the guide indicated was the tour that would have shown the mechanics of the building. The performance was incredible.
