    Anna Bolena - Opera
Performed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre
Duration: 3 hours and 10 min
Language: Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Desire burns in the shadows, rage blazes in the light. Anne Boleyn won the king’s desire first, his love second, but only an heir could deliver his loyalty. In a court full of secrets and spies, the Tudor Queen’s time is running out. Donizetti’s opera rips the best bits from a bloody time in history to create a thrilling ride through the last days of Anne Boleyn’s marriage to King Henry VIII. Jealous courtiers and scheming royals have the queen caught fast in a tightening trap. And her lady-in-waiting is waiting indeed, consumed with guilt, to take her place on the throne. With ardent melodies, fiery singing and acrobatic coloratura, every minute of Anna Bolena is a masterclass in bel canto opera. It depends on a stellar soprano to throw herself into the role. Ermonela Jaho is that singer, “a fiery angel” (The Economist) renowned for offering her heart and soul up on stage. “Don’t even try to resist,” warns the Financial Times. This starry cast includes Ho-Yoon Chung as Lord Percy and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the ruthless, passionate king. From the creative team that brought you Aida comes the first of a new trilogy of Donizetti’s Tudor Queen operas. Davide Livermore directs a new production featuring stunning costumes and his signature high-tech sets.

    Whiteley - Opera
Performed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre
Duration: 2 hours, including one interval
Language: Sung in English with English surtitles
He burst onto the international art scene, all golden curls and bravado. He was dynamic, damaged, a big idea and a bold brush. With the vivacious Wendy on his arm, Brett Whiteley was magnetic.
He abhorred straight lines, adored drugs, alcohol, women. He worked in vivid colour and ravishing curves. Heroin was both muse and merciless master. Out of this tumultuous life spilled a messy array of brilliant artworks and astonishing self-reflection. In 2019, this Australian icon meets two of Australia’s greatest artists in a brand new work for the Australian stage: Whiteley, by Elena Kats-Chernin and Justin Fleming. Kats-Chernin is peerless among contemporary composers, celebrated for her enormous output and music that bursts with colour, life and tenderness. Fleming is a respected playwright and librettist whose work is renowned for its warmth, wit and poignancy. Together they’ve created an opera to honour the life and work of a man who could not extricate his talent from his demons. Production designer Dan Potra’s technology-driven set is an immersive world created from Whiteley’s most famous paintings. Experience the works of a modern master on moving, larger-than-life screens.

    Duration: TBC

The moment the curtain went up on the original West Side Story on Broadway, musical theatre changed forever.
Hailed as the greatest Broadway musical of all time, the genius of West Side Story's creators is unquestioned. The Marriage of Figaro - Opera
Performed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre
Duration: 3 hours and 25 min , including one interval
Language: Sung in Italian with English surtitles
Mozart’s classic comedy has been entertaining crowds for centuries, and between the witty, fast-moving libretto and the melodic, charming writing, it’s not hard to understand why. Musically, this is the ultimate ensemble opera, with brilliant trios, quartets and even a fantastic sextet. Dramatically, it’s the opera with everything: lovers and liaisons, disguises and tricks, lust and laughter. The Countess loves the Count, but he’s got designs on his pretty, witty servant Susanna. But it’s Susanna’s wedding day, and Figaro has no plans of giving up his bride. During one crazy day of disguises, duplicity, desire and utter madness, the Count is going to get his comeuppance. Sir David McVicar’s naturalistic staging opens a “comic cauldron of sex and social politics” (Limelight), where the comedy has a dark, sharp edge. Jenny Tiramani’s extraordinary 17th-century designs clothe the aristocracy in ravishing silks and the servants in cornflower blue. A historical fashion specialist, Tiramani’s costumes are stunning in detail and authentic in design. David Finn’s radiant lighting streams through vaulted windows to light enormous rooms in sunlight and moonbeams as day turns to night. Young soprano Stacey Alleaume continues a thrilling rise with her role debut as Susanna. Andrei Bondarenko reprises his commanding performance as Count Almaviva with Russian soprano Ekaterina Sadovnikova as the Countess. Paolo Bordogna returns with his world-class Figaro, and Guillaume Tourniaire is the maestro.

Il Viaggio a Reims - Opera
Performed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre
Duration: 3 hours and 20 min , including one interval
Language: Sung in Italian with English surtitles
A Magritte, a van Gogh and a Goya walk into a gallery…If Rossini made a showreel of his best work, it would sound like Il Viaggio a Reims (The Journey to Reims). The prolific composer was unabashedly showing off when he wrote this incredible work, destined to dazzle the aristocracy at the crowning of Charles X and then disappear forever. The simple plot is a marvellous excuse for a string of fantastic arias and impressive ensemble pieces. Because it’s so demanding and expensive to stage, it’s never been seen in Australia before. But in 2019, Rossini’s exultant opera finally makes its Australian premiere, a spectacular vehicle for some of your favourite performers. In Damiano Michieletto’s playful take, the eccentric cast of characters find themselves in a gallery filled with the master works of art history. Vel□zquez’s enormous dresses jostle for space with Keith Haring’s cheerful murals. Frida Kahlo and van Gogh compare self-portraits. It’s a surreal world, where artworks step out of the frame and come to life the moment the lights go out. Delightful, surprising, spectacular and frivolous, this co-production with Dutch National Opera and the Royal Danish Theatre is a perfect foil for Rossini’s jubilant score. Gaze at the world’s most famous art through the magnificent (and thoroughly tongue-in-cheek) sets and costumes. Paolo Fantin and Carla Teti have recreated iconic works with remarkable fidelity. Young Australian conductor Daniel Smith makes his long-awaited debut with Opera Australia, bringing his characteristic sparkle in the pit to a huge cast of talents.

Great experience, but expensive. We expected that, though -- eating at a great restaurant and going to the opera is not going to be cheap.

  • Hawksfan (2017-05-23)5

Excellent experience. The tour of the opera house was very interesting and informative, and the dinner at Aria was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The opera, Tosca, was beautiful and we could not have expected a better experience all around.

  • Zaijin H (2017-03-11)5

    Excellent. Really enjoyed it.

The tour was not as in-depth as I thought it would be. Dinner was great and My Fair Lady was everything you could imagine.

It was great to have a tour guide who was visibly enthusiastic about the Opera house . Learned a lot of trivia about the place.

The play my fair lady was fantastic

  • Brian L (2016-10-19)5

Fantastic behind the scenes tour of the Sydney Opera House! Tour allows you to go under the stage to see where all the sets are and how the production is completed. Also get to see both theaters and learn about the history of the design, manufacturing and opening of attraction. Highly recommend this event that includes tour, dinner and a show!

  • Theodore J (2016-10-08)5

Great guides taking us to the inner sanctum of the Opera House. Our guide had worked in all areas of the place including being a performer.
