Your naturalist guide will meet you at your accommodation and after introductions all round, we’ll ascend the McAllister Ranges and head west through Mareeba embarking on a remarkable journey back to prehistoric times, when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.Along the way, we will stop for morning tea (Tea, Coffee & cake and sausage rolls).
After morning tea, we travel through the back blocks of this wetland area viewing wallabies, emus and other wildlife and then along the irrigated agricultural paddocks of this fertile area, eventually crossing over the Great Divide and into the Western watershed. (We use a wet weather alternate when the wetlands access is flooded) Travel through historical towns and rolling hills rich in minerals eventually giving way to towering limestone karsts scattered around Chillagoe.
We embark on the National Parks Cave Tour to see fossilised remains of the ancient coral reefs with hidden limestone labyrinths. The fossilized remains of the ancient coral reefs with hidden limestone labyrinths give a portal to a lost world just like our own Great Barrier Reef. Millions of years in the making, the limestone formations are nothing short of spectacular. We then delve into the history of the copper smelters, whose old chimneys dominate the western horizon. We visit the remains of the once mighty smelters to ponder what it was like working there. Now it’s time for a wonderful Aussie pub lunch.
After lunch, we will visit a local souvenir shop and head back towards the east coast, stopping at Granite Gorge where we can feed wallabies.
The tour ends with a return drive down the range to Cairns.

A fun day from Cairns, it is interesting to see the difference in the landscape a couple hours away. Our tour guide Fin was a little on the crazy side, but it was a fun interesting crazy. He was able to talk all day about the plant and animal life as well as aboriginal culture. the cave was nice to see, nothing new if you have been in caves before. Lunch was good, a big old burger in a tiny old mining town. We were able to see a lot of different Australian animals throughout the day and of course topped that all off with a trip to hand feed the Wallabies, definitely an unforgettable experience.

This was a jampacked day. Our guide - Fin- drove expertly over quite bumpy roads. This helps you get a real feel of the outback.
The place where we stopped for tea and biscuits was so calm and inviting. The boatride gave us some amazing photographs and videos.
We had requested for a vegetarian option for lunch and we got some amazing vege BBQ burgers. It was a relaxing time at lunch.
The caves themselves were the best part of the tour. We had a wondeful guide who walked us through the caves and explained everything patiently to all present.
One minus to note was that we weren't taken to the distillery on the way back. That bit would have been an excellent activity to end the perfect day.

I loved this trip. One of the most amazing trips Ive done, and Ive done a few. Its a long drive but totally worth it.

The guide was very knowledgeable and made the long trip very entertaining. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Australia. We would recommend this trip for a chance to see the outback and the beautiful Chillagoe caves.

Long day - lots of driving over very bumpy roads does give a sense of real back country.
Stop for tea and quiet boat ride was timely and interesting be sure to take the short walk down the trail to see the huge metal statue - very unusual!.
Lunch stop was fine BBQ hamburgers and again timely in terms of providing a break from the long drive.
Cave stop was the highlight - we spent just the right amount of time walking through the caves and hearing all about them.
Disappointed that we didn't actually stop at the distillery on the way back - tour guide said that the stop was no longer included on the tour...so the trip back to the hotel felt like it took forever.

Caves were beautiful, but since it was the wet season they were a bit slippery.

Finlay was a fantastic guide. This surpassed our expectations. The kids (10 and 7) were really good because Fin kept up the commentary and a smooth safe drive. Enormous amount of interesting local knowledge, Finlay was the best tour guide I've encountered. The lady in the office was also super nice!

This trip was absolutely made by our tour guide who had a wealth of information and was very engaging. The trip and the caves were interesting and it was good to see another side of Oz on our short trip to Cairns
