Learn about the origins of Brisbane, which was traditionally a ceremonial and trading crossroads for Aboriginal peoples in the region. European settlers established it as a penal colony where the “worst of the worst” were sent for lives of hard labor and punishment. See Brisbane's two remaining convict-built buildings, the Old Windmill and the Commissariat Store.
Then hear how the city developed into a modern commercial center and, more recently, a desirable destination with a cutting edge arts, food and nightlife scene. You might take a short ferry ride on a CityCat to get views from the Brisbane River and explore the banks of this vital waterway.
Stop at the building where the WWII command offices of General Douglas MacArthur were located, now the home of the MacArthur Museum. Your guide shares stories from WWII-era Brisbane, such as the 1942 Battle of Brisbane when tensions between Australian and US troops erupted in two nights of rioting. You can also stroll through ANZAC Square, an urban park with a memorial to ANZAC troops.
Expect to walk at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops during your 3-hour private tour. Afterward, hop on the ferry to return to the port, where your shore excursion finishes.
