Experience classic river transportation on an authentic paddle wheeler, the PS Murray Princess built for the Murray River, Australia's most important inland waterway and the world's third longest navigable river.
Well-equipped cabins, excellent meals and attentive staff ensure that you’re comfortable throughout your journey. (See Pricing for accommodation details.) The cruise focuses on nature and wildlife with informative special presentations, shoreline tours and nature hikes. Day 1: Adelaide Mundarra (D) Board a deluxe coach in downtown Adelaide for transfer to Mannum, a little over an hour’s drive away. Mannum is the original home of the Murray River paddle wheeler, a vessel that transported goods to the river's rural settlements long before cars and trains. As you drive, take in the sight of the semi-arid valley that yields an assortment of crops.
After you board the paddle wheeler and get settled in your cabin, float downriver. Then enjoy a special welcome dinner as the evening arrives. Afterward, listen to live musical entertainment indoors, or watch as the boat’s floodlights illuminate the riverbank. You may glimpse nocturnal wildlife such as grey kangaroos, hair-nosed wombats, Murray long-necked tortoises, spoon-beaked egrets and more as your paddle wheeler glides to Mundarra for mooring overnight. Day 2: Mundarra Salt Bridge Flat (B, L, D) In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, choose to join a guided tour of the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions or go on a wildlife tour at Monarto Zoo (additional cost).
If you choose to visit Monarto Zoo will arrive back on board the Murray Princess in time for lunch and to in time to join in the Sturt Dining Room for a special presentation on the bounty of food and wine produced in the Riverland.
In the afternoon, continue the journey upriver before mooring at Salt Bush Flat for the night. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by our talented crew. Overnight: Salt Bush Flat
Day 3: Salt Bush Flat to Piggy Flat/Coolcha (B, L, D)
All ashore for the guided nature walk where your guide will share the secrets of the local flora and fauna. It’s a great way to get in a little exercise before the PS Murray Princess departs and cruises downriver.
Near Fromms Landing, the PS Murray Princess will turn and head downriver to River View Lodge (near Piggy Flat / Coolcha) where your discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, you'll explore the maze of the river and the birdlife is amazing. Watch for darters, herons and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges. The afternoon offers a choice of bocce or fishing challenges before joining the Captain and Officers for the Farewell Dinner and Dance.
Day 4: Piggy Flat/Coolcha - Mannum - Adelaide (B) Head back to Mannum and after breakfast, reluctantly say farewell as you arrive at the Mannum Wharf. Board your coach and return to Adelaide.
