Visit the Eastern State Penitentiary which was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Today, it stands in ruin as a haunting world of crumbling cell blocks and empty guard towers.Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone
Learn about American history through the footsteps of Benjamin Franklin on a 75-minute walking tour. As an expert historian guide leads you around the historic district, learn interest anecdotes and historical facts. Highlights include Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Carpenters’ Hall - where the Continental Congress met to discuss its grievances with England.
Along the way, you will see Christ Church, where Ben Franklin and our Founding Fathers worshiped, the Betsy Ross House, where the first flag was made, and the Christ Church Burial Ground, the final resting place of Ben Franklin and many historic leaders. One of the best historical tours we have done to date. Our guide was an absolute pleasure to listen to and it's quite clear he knows his city.

Had a great experience. The HOHO bus took us to all the historic places. We spent a lot of time at the Eastern State Penitentiary. Unfortunately, time did not permit us to take the Franklin's Footsteps walking tour. The Penitentiary was extremely interesting and informative. We all had a great day and loved the tour. I am a native Californian and my husband and I live there. We were visiting my husband's sister and husband. They, being native Pennsylvanians, had never been to Philadelphia to see the American history places. They were all very impressed with the tour.

the tour was very nice and complete, the tour guide for the franklin footsteps was very nice, lots of knowledge, very enthusiastic, the eastern state was interesting, only problems we had was that the person that printed our ticket, when we gave him the vouchers, did not included the entrance to the penintentiary and i had to call the agency that was our local contact there, so they will call and tell them to let us in, so keep this in mind to check your receipt and make sure all the tours you have purchased are shown in the receipt, also, the last day on saturday, the last bus that picked us up at the Rocky statue, was old, had no A.C and I sat in the back seat and it was burning in the bottom, in the metal part below the seat, this bus should be taken out of operation, and also sometimes, buses took longer to pass by the stops than what they said,

We had a wonderful time! The bus tour was so informative. They make frequent stops and let you know what each stop is like.
We did not get a chance to do Franklin's Footsteps, but plan on going back for the tour.
The Eastern State Penitentiary was fantastic. You take a guided audio tour so you can take your time.
