Known for historic landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, Philadelphia is also home to another must-see treasure: the 9th Street Italian Market, where butchers, spice merchants and chocolatiers have carried on their families' food traditions since the 1880s.
Meet your local guide at South Street and walk through the Bella Vista neighborhood in South Philly. Peek down narrow streets where you’ll see mosaic art from a local artist, and then stop by a delectable deli and bakery. Meander along Christian Street before arriving at the Italian Market with its historic marker.
With your guide leading the way, peruse the array of shops, many of Italian heritage. Wander past cheeses, chocolates, spices and olive oils that tempt your taste buds, and discover myriad produce stalls, as well as a kitchen store. Along the way, stop to talk to market vendors and hear fascinating tales about the development of South Philly over the decades. Your guide can help you find a bargain with special discounts.
Continue on toward a variety of Mexican stores in an area where the boxer Rocky Balboa (famously played by Sylvester Stallone) ran through the streets on one of his training runs. Nearby, you’ll find a selection of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese shops.

I loved this tour! THe guide was a local and knew sooooo much! I highly recommend this tour.Her name was Cheryl Weiss and the tour was put on by Urban Adventures. Philly was a great city to visit.

I guess I'm just used to 'samples' from other tours through Viator as being a sample from each place and not me having to purchase a 'sample'. The guide was very knowledgeable about the area and being a history buff, I did enjoy that part but felt for what I paid 'samples' should have been a part of this. Not only were they not a part of the tour ok, the bread at the very start was, a loaf of bread that everyone touched and shared but IF you wanted something to purchase, there were lines every where to stand and wait in. Not wanting to hold up the group, we ended up not purchasing no one else was and not getting to try the fare. Next time I've learned that I'l have to ask before signing up for a 'eating' tour again, I've done many 'eating tours' through Viator and this is the 1st that did not hold up to what they claimed.

I loved this tour- a mix of history and food! Our guide was very knowledgeable and we visited places we would not have been to by ourselves.

Nina was a great tour guide! We loved learning about the Italian market and got some really delicious snacks cheese, bread, chips. Highly recommend! Was a highlight of our Philly trip.

This was one of the very best guided tours I have ever taken. Our guide, Ariel, was an encyclopedia of knowledge of the area. She was exceptionally personable, she knew so many of the vendors, and she made the tour highly personal. You could not go wrong taking this tour.

Together with three friends from Bucks county, PA we had a wonderful tour with Nina. She was knowledgeable, personable and very patient. We all live so close, but have never actually gone on a tour of the Market . . . without the tour, we would have missed so much. We will definitely recommend your tours without hesitation.! Thanks so much for a great time.
