No trip to San Francisco is complete without an outing to the Monterey Peninsula and the quaint coastal village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. After being picked up from your San Francisco hotel, begin your day trip with a scenic drive down California’s most beautiful road, Highway 1. Gaze out at the waves of the Pacific crashing against the verdant coastal cliffs, and be sure to get your camera ready for photo stops along the way.
Bring your walking shoes, as there’s a lot to explore, even in a small area. Stroll Monterey’s historic waterfront district, Cannery Row, which John Steinbeck wrote about. Lines of factories used to can sardines from the nearby waters. Prepare to enter the underwater world when your guide leads you into the Monterey Bay Aquarium, home to a vast diversity of sea life. You’ll enjoy a VIP lunch in the aquarium.
From there you'll continue south along the scenic coast to Carmel-by-the-Sea, home to lots artists, writers and celebrities. Keep an eye out for onetime mayor Clint Eastwood at his former restaurant, the Hog’s Breath Inn. You’ll have time to stroll the boutique shops in the storybook houses that line the downtown streets. Don’t miss the stunning and historic Carmel Mission, founded in 1770.
